A PSALM FOR AMERICA

A Psalm for America
Composed by the members of Community Covenant Church, Manlius, NY,
at our prayer meeting October 27, 2008.

O Lord, great and awesome God,
forgiving and merciful, righteous and faithful,
we call upon you to hear our prayer.
We who are in covenant with you—we pray for our nation.
You have given us freedom—as no other nation—
and we have abused it, departing from you and your Word,
getting farther away on the wrong roads.
Lord, as we have broken our relationship with you,
our own relationships are breaking down.
We cannot hear you and we cannot hear one another.
So the weak suffer—children, women, the elderly,
the poor, the disabled, the unborn,
and so many men who have lost their way.
Self-centeredness results in more and more people not being loved.
Come back, Lord Jesus!
Have mercy on us!
Give us ears to hear and eyes to see.
Break through our stubbornness
and convict us with the drawing power of the Holy Spirit.
Help us to hear and see you—
then we will be able to hear and see one another.
Please give us grace to love you, O Lord,
and to love our neighbor.
We have lost the understanding of you as our Heavenly Father.
Restore the Spirit of Adoption
where we could call you, “Abba, Father.”
Save our society from its illegitimacy.
Bring the American dream into line with your dream for us!
Dear Father, you sent the Lord Jesus,
the Lamb of God into the world
to bear the sins and sorrows
that we have mentioned to you in this prayer.
So we plead and we trust in your cross to still save the world.
O Lord, we trust you to hear us. In Jesus Name, Amen.
